Monitoring and evaluation forms an integral part of the HIV prevention programme as developed.

The Masibambisane "Beyond Awareness" Campaign consists of various sub-themes, each with their own objectives. In addition, the media developed for each sub-theme addresses specific objectives within a particular sub-theme.

Monitoring of the campaign therefore measures the success of media items developed against the progress towards reaching their specific objective. Adjustments, additions and corrections can be made based on the feedback received.

Final evaluation of the total plan is performed against feedback and research that will measure the degree of behaviour change of members of the Department of Defence.

Behaviour change is monitored throughout the campaign by means of bio-psychosocial indicators. The various bio-psychosocial indicators that have been identified are as follows:

  • Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice (KAP) surveys. The KAP survey has been designed with the objectives of the awareness programme in mind, so that changes in attitude and practice can be measured as the awareness programme unfolds. This KAP survey will be performed every 6 months to track any changes in behavior and to allow for the possible identification of mass awareness components that have been particularly effective.
  • Epidemiological parameters. Various biological indicators has been identified to monitor behaviour change in the organisation. After the determination of baseline information for each of the indicators, the indicators are monitored to establish the success of interventions. Some of the indicators are the following:
    • Amount of condoms used.
    • Amount of Sexually Transmitted Infections recorded.
    • Current HIV prevalence.
    • Amount of gloves used in SA Military Health Service.
    • Amount of occupational injuries recorded.
    • Amount of self-disclosure of HIV status.
    • Amount of HIV positive members seeking health intervention.
    • Amount of HIV tests requested by members.
