The Department of Defence has developed an HIV Programme that addresses
all aspects of HIV management. The programme focuses on the following
components:
This component establishes programmes that focus
on changing the behaviour of members and employees of the DOD. All
employees and members are further provided with the knowledge and
means towards protecting themselves from HIV transmission, both
within the organisation and in the community.
All employees and members of the DOD that are
approved clientele of the SA Military Health Service, and that are
infected or affected by HIV are assured of, and provided with care
and support throughout the complete continuum of care.
Information with regard to the current status of
the epidemic must be available at all times, and such information
must be utilised to determine the impact of HIV on the DOD, and
to develop effective intervention and training programmes in the
DOD. This component ensures that this is achieved and that the intervention
and training programmes are evaluated to determine their effectiveness
and to provide input towards improving HIV management within the
DOD.
All personnel in the DOD
are provided with the necessary information to protect themselves
from infection. Those employees and members involved in programme
management, care and support are provided with the necessary skills
and knowledge to perform their duties.
